Makalu Base Camp is a popular trekking destination among the solitary trekkers.  It is the fifth highest mountain in the world at 8,485m. The Base Camp to Makalu starts from Tumlingtar. The trek is a delight with chilling adventures for the nature enthusiasts seeking for the pace of nature. The highlight of the trek is the rich paradise of nature along with beautiful mountains, wide varieties of plants, animal life, pine forest, and great gratitude by warm heart people and variations of customs.

Itinery Detail

  • Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

After your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you are supposed to complete all the customs formalities and meet our representative outside who will be welcoming you in our traditional way with a flower garland. Then you will be transferred to the hotel.

  • Day 2: Sightseeing Kathmandu

After breakfast, we will be visiting the World Heritage Sites: Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, and Boudhanath. At the evening we meet our entire trekking team and our guides for the preparation of the trip.

  • Day 3: Flight to Tumlingtar

We take a 40 min flight from Kathmandu to Tumglingtar. We can observe stunning snow-capped peaks of Ganesh Himal to Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, etc. After landing at Tumlingtar we explore the great town of Tumlingtarrest of the day.

  • Day 4: Drive to Num (1560m) 6hrs 

After a great day at Tumlingtar, we take the drive to Num village located in Sankhasawa District of Koshi zone.

  • Day 5: Trek to Seduwa (1500m) 6hrs

We start our trek from a very steep slope and terraced towards the Aron river, approximately 800 meters below. After reaching the bottom, we cross the suspension bridge across the mighty Aron River. Then climb from the rainforest to Seduwa, a village with a small health center and a primary school.

  • Day 6: Trek to Tashigaon (2100m) 4-5 hrs

We have a nice easy short walk about 3-4 hours taking you to countryside farm villages. It is a gradual trail and climbing for an hour through millet and rice fields takes you to Tashigaon. We’ll overnight there.

  • Day 7: Rest day

After walking for days it’s important for the body to have rest. We will rest and enjoy the natural habitat of Tashigaon village. For those who wish to explore the nearby surrounding can walk around the area.

  • Day 8: Trek to Khongma (3500m) 6-7 hrs

This will be a tough day as we have to walk down a steep trail at a higher altitude. We will climb through the forest to a stream and then to a ridge. From there, the path becomes steeper and passes Kharka and eventually follows a series of rocky stone steps and small lakes that ascend to the top of the hills to reachKhongma.

  • Day 9: Trek to Dobato

After spending the night at Khongma we head towards Dobato through the Shipton pass, Kalopokhari and Keke pass. We can see a great view of Chamlang, Peak 6 and Peak 7.

  • Day 10: Trek to yangrikhara (3557m) 6-7 hrs

We head towards Yangrikhara passing through the steep trails of Rhododendron forest which leads to the Barun river and upper reaches of the valleys. And again after 3-4 hours gaining the altitude, we reach Yanagihara.

  • Day 11: Trek to Shersong (4410m)

As we go up from Yangrikhara the vegetation starts to get thin.
After reaching Shersong we can see the bottom of the glacier baron and a towering Mt. Makalu. This is also called lower base camp of Mt. Makalu and offers great views of the peaks and surrounding ranges.

  • Day 12: Trek to Makalu Base camp (4870m)

To reach Makalu base camp (5000 meters) from Sharasang, we have to climb a nominal route, after which we descend from the base and boulder to the west side of the river from the base camp.  There are no huts, shelter or vegetation in the base camp but we can see terrific scenes of the south face of Mt. Makalu.

  • Day 13: Trek High Camp & Rest Day

Spending a night at Makalu Base Camp we climb up to 5250 meters on the lower slope of Peak 3. From this place, we can see the views of Lhotse, Lhotse Shar, and Everest. We rest for the rest of the day enjoying the stunning views of the mountains.

  • Day 14: Trek back to YarkKharka

We trek back to YarkKharka from the same route that we ascend.

  • Day 15:  Trek to Khongma

We keep descending through rockfall and climb the rocky gully to dobate. And we cross kaka la, Shipton la to reach Khongma.

  • Day 16: Trek to Sudewa

After spending the night at Khongma we trek back to Sudewa through the countryside farm villages. We will once again cross the rice and millet field.

  • Day 17: Num and drive to Khandbari, Tumling

On this day we get back go Num from where we started our trek. After reaching Num we take a drive to Khandbari and hike three or four hours to reach Tumlingtar.

  • Day 18: Fly Kathmandu

In this day we take a flight to Kathmandu from TumlingtarAirpot.

  • Day 19: Shopping

In this day you may take rest or you may visit Kathmandu. You may go shopping for your loved ones and also for yourself as remembrances of the trek and Nepal.

  • Day 20: Fly back home country

We drop you at the Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure with a hope of seeing you again.
